The Derbyshire Musters of 1638–9 Part 1, Vol 46
Edited by Victor Rosewarne
In 1638 the 3rd earl of Devonshire ordered the constables to compile lists of all men aged between16 and 60 in each town and village, which he had copied into a volume to be sent up to London. The book, provides a uniquely full record of the inhabitants of every community in Derbyshire on the eve of the Civil War. The volume is fully indexed by person and place and prefaced by a detailed introduction. For ease of handling, the Record Society is publishing this work in two parts. Part 1, to be published in July 2021, will contain the introduction and indexes. Part 2, which will follow in the autumn, will contain the texts of 1638 and 1639. Dividing the book into two parts means that users can have the index and the lists of names in front of them at the same time. It also spreads the cost of a work that runs to over 400 pages.
